The Journey to Play and Learn Chinese with Mei Mei
Mei Mei Hu is an educator and the creator of the Play & Learn Chinese series, which includes a language CD, the popular Dance & Learn with Mei Mei and the simplified character instruction books Let’s Write Chinese with Mei Mei. After having taught English in China at the well-known University of Science and Technology. In 1986 she received her master’s degree in Education and began work as a Montessori teacher, guiding young children in their earliest lessons. In the meantime, Mei Mei had also been teaching Chinese language at Rhode Island College, which eventually led her to teaching positions at Providence College and Brown University.
Since 2000, Mei Mei’s energies have been focused on teaching Chinese language and culture to the large number of local children adopted from China and, through her educational videos, to others all over the country and even internationally. The Play and Learn series has been well-received by a world-wide audience of children and parents alike. Mei Mei’s enthusiasm for conveying the joy and pride she takes in her native culture is her trademark. She has demonstrated her teaching style in presentations from Atlanta to Boulder, from Andover to New York City. Her vast experience teaching both young children and older students qualifies her as a uniquely flexible and effective educator. Founded by Mei Mei Hu in 2001, Mei Mei and Me produces audio and video programming to help children learn Chinese language and culture.
Conceived as an extension of the learning process begun in the first Play and Learn Chinese with Mei Mei video, Mei Mei’s continuing series is designed for 3 to 9-year-olds, but useful for beginning Chinese learners of all ages. Because of this project’s uniqueness in planning and liveliness of presentation, children are introduced to a wealth of information in an accessible and enjoyable way. Mei Mei’s videos invite your children to further their Chinese through “questions and answers.” Mei Mei, who demonstrates each new topic with a fun and original song, presents these interactively to her students and the audience. The lyrics of the songs are used to teach vocabulary, grammar and syntax, and then are sung and danced to by Mei Mei’s students and the viewers. The music and movement will keep your child involved from beginning to end, and the on-screen presentation of English, Pinyin, and simplified characters guarantees additional learning from repeated viewing
